Terry Hagiwara

Artist Statement

"Let my pieces speak to you."

I find beauty in anything almost symmetric (or organized) but with its symmetry

slightly broken (or with a hint of chaos). I appreciate controlled behavior of

freedom and spontaneous fluidity.

Bio: Born in Japan, some time ago. Came to Stony Brook, Long Island, N.Y. in

'69, and to Houston in '81 from Boston. Began taking ceramic classes from Bill

Dennard at Glassel in '89. Had never played with mud-water-and-fire

combination before, even when growing up in Kyushu, Japan.

Kyushu (the third largest island in Japan, southwest of Honshu main island) is

famous for many ceramic sites such as Arita, Imari, Nabeshima, Karatsu,

Takatori, Agano, etc.
