Welcome to Bella Vista’s October 2009 Newsletter

Feeling the crisp cool mountain air in October makes me want to grab my fish-eye camera, my backpack, the dogs and of course Glenn, and explore nature before that last bit of color leaves us for a while.  Some of our favorite places to go are those places we get lost finding.  Of course, we could never explain to anyone where we were or how we get there; however, somehow we manage to make it back home safe and sound.  Secretly, I think our truck knows the way back home.  At the end of the day from our nature excursions, all the “animals” are content and sleepy.

October in Asheville is filled with wonderful art related events.  Some are for fun and some are for a good cause.  There is a new art market that is in Pack Place . There are all types of artwork that will be exhibited.  Also, another great art market is the Southern Highland Guild exhibition at the Asheville Civic Center .  These highly regarded artists and crafters will have their work on display for one weekend.  How about dinner at Biltmore Estate for Halloween?  WNCAP is having their annual “Raise Your Hand Auction” at Biltmore Estate on Halloween .  Two of Bella Vista’s artists, Nathaniel Galka and Trinity St. James donated paintings for the auction.  There are lots of collectables, artwork and valuables for the silent auction, and then the real fun takes place when the fast talking auctioneer gets the crowd going with the auctioned items………….I love to see the bidding wars, and it is for a good cause………….We hope to see you there!

Patsy Gilbert, a Knoxville painter will debut her paintings at Bella Vista beginning in October. We are excited to have this talented artist in our collection.  Also, the “feature wall” artist for October is Nathaniel Galka. Check out his new “Primate Series”.  The eyes truly capture a deep emotion. (I often wonder why I have such compassion for animals. Maybe that is part of being human?)  Anyway, I love his quiet contemplative paper pieces too.  Also, we have a new oil painting by Nicora Gangi, titled, “He Said, She Heard”.  Nicora is an incredible still life painter.  If you get a chance, check out her pastels; they are masterful little jewels. Other great news, Tracy Lynn Pristas, recently had a few of her paintings featured in the Show time Series, “Drop Dead Diva.” Go Tracy!  Her paintings are vibrant and feminine, and just plain make you feel good.

I love going into galleries wherever we travel. Last Sunday we went to the 5th Annual Bakersville Creek Walk Arts Festival it turns out that it had rained all day Saturday and been a real muddy mess, but Sunday was nice. Anyways across the street we checked out the Crimson Laurel Gallery.  It has been over a year since I had been in there. That’s the kind of gallery that really inspires me. They have some great local ceramists and really put together a nice focused collection.

I mentioned their ceramic collection because this year Christin and I began to talk about focusing our ceramic collection. It started first with Jann Welch's fantastic hanging Raku Torsos, and Scott Haines' decorative and very controlled Raku vases. Then Steven Forbes-deSoule joined the mix with his organic and exciting Raku pieces; that is when Christin and I started to think about focusing more on Raku. This year we were joined by Terry Hagiwara from Texas, whose geometrically decorated Raku vases compliment the gallery nicely.  Then around mid-year the gallery began to work with Lorri Acott-Fowler whose inspirational Raku Sculptural figures we are now fortunate to represent in our gallery.

Next month is the Weaverville Art Safari and we are planning on checking it out. See ya there!
