Melissa Nelson
Statement
Expression through art has been life-long for me. Before I could speak, I gestured. Before I could write, I drew.
The integrity and intention of my work is based on the invitation to make I contact with what lies between. Sculpting allows me to experience and share the gravitational pull between beauty and the eye of the beholder, or the ancient bond between a wink and a nod.
Those who see themselves in my work look beyond the face of the piece, to the truer reflection…to the perpetual work-in-progress, the I captured in mid-evolution in the moment between clay to stone.
BIO
Melissa Nelson, a self-taught sculptress, began romancing clay in 1989. What began as a flirtation became an outlet that became an obsession that became a life-path.
Today, Nelson's studio kneels beneath the pines on a mountaintop in Horse Shoe, NC. Her sculptures, hand-built stoneware and written works are collected internationally.
