Artist's Statement
The birth of my daughter 3 years ago initiated the course of my current work. Part of my idea of being a human, a mother, and an artist is to recognize the importance of having a creative and imaginative approach to life, and not allow ourselves to be swallowed up by our busy existences. The lessons learned in the studio continually challenge me to slow down, not become overly attached to an idea, and to be open to new things
I am fascinated by the human figure, textile and fashion design, and patterns found in nature. Clay allows me the freedom to incorporate all of these interests. I hand-build the pieces using slab and coil technique in combination with old shells, broken coral pieces, bark, and anything else I can find to create texture. After the bisque fire I use a variety of acrylic paints, oxides and mason stains to finish the surface.
The female figure continues to surface as a form of expression. These women are from the various ethnic backgrounds and perhaps other planets, combining features of fish, birds, Buddhist monks, ancient grandmothers
My relationships, hearing a line from a poem or a song, looking at art that I admire or a beautiful dress are all sources of inspiration that make their way into the work.
My hope is that my figures will tell a story of strength, love, surrender, and wisdom. Perhaps they will communicate a fraction of the rich histories and courage we all carry with us. At the same time I want to invite the viewer to make their own associations in relation to their personal identity and the world around them.
