Statement:
Working on location, I am able to see the subtleties of color in the landscape as light and atmosphere affect the scene. I enjoy employing all the techniques possible with oils such as thick impasto, translucent washes, and palette knife. With expressive brushwork, I seek to create a painting that conveys not only time and place, but also showcases the beauty of my surroundings.
About the Artist:
Bethanne Kinsella Cople received a classical Fine Art education at The George Washington University, with an emphasis on drawing and composition. It was here, while copying various works from the National Gallery, that she discovered her love for the impressionist style.
Inspired from working with nationally known artists, Bethanne has established her personal style. Her paintings are bold and painterly. She takes advantage of the full potential of oils often employing a thick impasto that gives her paintings character. F. Lennox Campello, of Gallery Beat, Old Town Crier, describes “Carmel Sea” as one of the best pieces in the show, and states that it “captures the essence of the Pacific Ocean in that Californian uniqueness best described by the generous, loose brush strokes employed by the artist”.
Whether painting around her home in historic Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia, or traveling to such locations as Monhegan Island, Maine, Texas, California, Utah, Arizona and across Europe, Bethanne strives to catch the nuances of light and atmosphere in her subject.
