Artist Statement

My experience and expression of time through painting reflects constant flux, mostly in a chaotic state, unwieldy and not necessarily linear. I am interested in how space and time now is influenced by the then and the yet to come. To me, moments in time are abstract and non- tangible. Paint is the act of exploring the fleeting abstraction of time. The paintings development of space reveals nature or a suggested environment which expresses that chaotic state.

The figure in my work solidifies the space, allowing the viewer a steady moment. I am not necessarily interested in what the person looks like but rather how the painting feels. I seek to paint a rhythm and tone that evokes an experience of time, place and a particular relationship/s. I want the viewer to not only see the figure but also the paint as the written language which coalesces into the figure.

I want the viewer to know each decision along the way, to experience the building of time within the painting. The paint itself becomes a record of time, secrets of where things were and are. Each painting has its own collection of moments. I seek to push the boundaries of memory versus reality and between abstraction versus representation. Painting becomes a dance of order and chaos. It is equally important for me to let go of the image as it is to build it up, to push it to its’ fullest potential and then lose it again. Each time I return to the studio in hopes of resurrecting the image. It is this quest for balance that ultimately leaves the viewer hovering between seeing and not seeing everything.
