Angelique Brickner
Artist Statement
I begin with a thought, an idea or a feeling, and a large lump of clay. I carve and dig at the clay until the image exposes itself. Then I start the practical, technical plan to assure a successful firing process. I may coil, slab build or hollow the solid form; the choice depends on my ability to retain the natural integrity of the form. I work figuratively because the human form and countenance communicate to us innately, as it is recognized. The language of the body is universal; it can be immediately understood. We don’t have to first learn a new language in order to understand the message. I appreciate the pure simplicity.
Much of my work explores man’s relationship to the edge upon which we exist. We are but a paradigm shift away from radically different realities. Those of us aware of this edge struggle to balance, sometimes fight, sometimes fear it. Those that are blissfully unaware are forced to acknowledge the presence of this edge at one time or another as one reality shifts or collapses into a place unexpected that then forces a new perspective.
